Mothers’ Music project was an artistic collaboration between the Opera Idaho Children’s Chorus and artist Dia Bassett.

The multi-week collaboration coalesced into two 10 x 10 ft. art installations presented as a backdrop to the singing children at their May 2023 public, spring concert at First Presbyterian Church in downtown Boise.

Collaboration with an artist…

  • A Dream

The large-scale rainbow weaving was a collaborative project with Opera Idaho Children's Chorus families. The rainbow and colors were inspired by the song Make a Rainbow, sung by the youngest group during their 2023 spring concert. The song is about embracing diversity.

The Mother’s Music project was supported by Idaho Arts in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts.

  • A Collaboration

For Mother’s Music, I led and taught families to create the large, mixed-media fiber installations with me. I invited the participating families to join me in cutting the linens into long, continuous thread, which I demonstrated and guided. We also cut fabric into smaller geometric shapes for children to paint onto before being sewn onto the weavings. The cut linens were woven into 2 large 10 x 10 ft fiber installations to hang from 2 freestanding backdrop stands.

  • A Performance

Some of the music sung by the children’s chorus were excerpts from nursery rhymes, which were reminiscent for many.

For the Mother’s Music project, I asked participants to remember music from their childhood. What music reminds you of your mother? Did your mother sing to you?

The collaborative project coalesced into a final fiber installation that hung behind singers in downtown Boise in the historical First Presbyterian Church, during the Children's Chorus spring 2023 concert.
